The diagram below illustrates how the various maps in AL DOHRAL fit
together.
TWO CONTINENTAL GRIDS MAKE UP THE WHOLE OF THE GLOBE, EACH DEFINING A HEMISPHERE OF THE PLANET.*
At the top of the diagram is GRID 6, aka CONTINENTAL GRID, includes 49
REGIONAL GRIDS shown as single CELLS here, each represents approx.
2,689,120 meters on a side or approx. 2,689 kilometers (1,783 miles).
The whole of this GRID represents 13,841,287,201
NWN Area Maps of 16x16 Tiles arranged as a 117,649 x 117,649 grid.
Progressing toward the bottom of the diagram, GRID 5, aka REGIONAL GRID, the next level
includes 49 GRAND GRIDS which are shown as single CELLS here, each
represents approx. 384,160 meters on a side or approx. 384 kilometers
(255 miles). The whole of this GRID represents 282,475,249 NWN Area Maps
of 16x16 Tiles arranged as a 16,807x16,807 grid.
Progressing toward the bottom of the diagram GRID 4, aka GRAND GRID, the next level
includes 49 MID GRIDS which are shown as single CELLS here, each
represents approx. 54,880 meters on a side or approx. 55 kilometers
(36 miles). The whole of this GRID represents 5,764,801 NWN Area Maps
of 16x16 Tiles arranged as a 2401x2401 grid.
Progressing toward the bottom of the diagram GRID 3, aka MID GRID, the next level
includes 49 BASE GRIDS which are shown as single CELLS here, each
represents approx. 7,840 meters on a side or approx. 8 kilometers
(5 miles). The whole of this GRID represents 117,649 NWN Area Maps
of 16x16 Tiles arranged as a 343x343 grid.
Progressing toward the bottom of the diagram GRID 2, aka BASE GRID, the next level
includes 49 AREA GRIDS which are shown as single CELLS here, each
represents approx. 1,120 meters on a side or approx. 1 kilometers
(0.75 miles). The whole of this GRID represents 2401 NWN Area Maps
of 16x16 Tiles arranged as a 49x49 grid.
Progressing toward the bottom of the diagram GRID 1, aka AREA GRID, the next level
includes 49 OF THE NWN TOOLSET AREAS which are shown as single
CELLS here, each represents approx. 160 meters on a side or approx.
TWO FOOTBALL FIELDS (560' OR 186.666~ YARDS). The whole of this GRID
represents 49 NWN Area Maps of 16x16 Tiles arranged as a 7x7 grid.
At the time of writing, designs mapped, and pluggedin span a full GRID 2 in size. If this area proves popular enough, more will be built and linked.
* The astute will note that at the equator, the world of the Aerthen Realms is
approximately 40,000 kilometers in circumference while the total linear measure
of the GRIDS above yield the following :
GRID 1 = 7 NWN Areas of 160 meters across... or 1120 meters
GRID 2 = 7 of GRID 1 ... or 7,840 meters
GRID 3 = 7 of GRID 2 ... or 54,880 meters
GRID 4 = 7 of GRID 3 ... or 384,160 meters
GRID 5 = 7 of GRID 4 ... or 2,689,120 meters
GRID 6 = 7 of GRID 5 ... or 18,823,840 meters
and while it is asserted that two of these allow for mapping the whole world of
the Aerthen Realms, the math shows that this does not work; there are some
'missing maps'. What this is attributed to is our mapping a round (globe) on
flat square maps such as we make for NWN, the gaps between Area maps varies due
to location on the globe, but makes up less than six percent of the total globe.
Of course, as mapping gets nearer the poles, there are further 'adjustments' to the
GRID loosing whole columns of Areas in certain cases, in order to approximate a
globe shape.
The GRID of Maps
WORLD GRID (GRID_6)

CONTINENTAL GRID (GRID_5)
The AL DOHRAL core module is located in cell 25 on this grid.

REGIONAL GRID (GRID_4)
The AL DOHRAL core module is located in cell 25 on this grid.

UBER GRID (GRID_3)
The AL DOHRAL core module is located in cell 25 on this grid.

MID GRID (GRID_2)
The AL DOHRAL core module is located in cells 17, 18, 19, 20, 24, 25, 26, and 27 on this grid.

BASE GRID (GRID_1)
The AL DOHRAL core module PRESENTLY spans eight such grids.
Given the above, it may be worth noting that the city of Dohral is located at coordinates A1825_2525_2525, comprising 49, a 7x7 grid of 'Areas'. The 'province' is a more conventional name to apply to the landgrant that was the mustering out benefit for ranking soldiers in the service of Bennin oz Dohral back in the early days. The realworld Romans used a similar measurement of land, called the 'Jugera' equal to approximately 310 acres, and is coincidentally close in measure to the land in a 'province'.
Within each 'province' and to some measure within any GRID, regions are often noted as being associated with some direction from the central location itself e.g. Northern Tivook Province. The nonclemenature of such divisions is ilustrated in the image above.
